The greatest rugby out-half of his era, Eugene played ten consecutive seasons for Ireland from 1925 to 1934 gaining 34 caps. He scored five tries for Ireland from the out-half position and scored another three in one international when playing centre. He also captained Ireland and he and Con Murphy have been the only Lansdowne men to have done so since the 1920's. He turned down an invitation to join the 1929 Lions to New Zealand because of business pressure.
