Victor Le Fanu was captain of the first Lansdowne team to win the Leinster Senior Cup in 1891. He played 11 times for Ireland and was captain on 3 occasions. It is claimed that he would have won more caps, but had a difference of opinion with the selectors and suffered the consequences. A forward, Le Fanu also gained three blues at Cambridge University and has the distinction of being the first Irish international to play in the Varsity match. A contemporary account describes him as "a tall, ginger-headed man, he was quick thinking, sure-handed and a devastating tackler. Later he played a looser forward game and fell out of favour with the selectors". He was made president of the club in the 1932-33 season and died in 1939
