U21s Friends First Castle Trophy Saturday September 22nd @ Blackrock College RFC

Sep 24, 2012

Lansdowne arrived in Stradbrook on a fresh and sunny September morning and set about preparing for a long day of Rugby. We had 14 new players in our 25 man squad and this was a great way of getting them used to playing together and getting used to our style of play.
Lansdowne were drawn in group 2 alongside UCD, Garryowen & Old Wesley. Our first match of 15 minutes a side was against Garryowen @ 1.00pm. We made hard work of the first 10 minutes and looked every bit the new team we were but got into our stride and managed to hold out a determined Garryowen team and came away with 4 tries for a 23 – 0 victory.
Next up at 2.20pm were Old Wesley who again made life very hard for us and an entertaining game ended up with Lansdowne coming away with 2 converted tries and a 14 – 0 victory.
Our final pool game was against UCD at 3.40pm with the winner advancing to the Castle Trophy final. In a very competitive and tough encounter Lansdowne came away with a narrow 8 – 3 victory to reach the final
With tired bodies on the line and injuries taking a toll we played Old Belvedere in the final at 5.50pm. Belvo were the sharper team from the off and their more experienced team took advantage of some sloppy defending by Lansdowne and quickly raced to a 3 try lead which turned into a 4th by half time where Belvo lead 23 – 0 . We made a better job of it in the 2nd half but couldn’t overcome our poor 1st half with Belvo ending up as deserved winners of the Castle Trophy. Best for Lansdowne on the day were Sean Mullholland, Jonno Rice, Josh Hinde, Colin Fair Brennan, Ross Deacon & John Kennedy to name but a few but all in all it was a great squad effort to get to the final with our very young team.
We hope to welcome back the majority of our inter pros this week with the Under 19 contingent returning the following week. We play St. Mary’s in Lansdowne on Wednesday 26th at 8.00pm and Travel to Buccaneers on Saturday the 29th for our final pre-season game.
A big thank you to Blackrock College RFC for organising and running a great day which will hopefully become an annual event.
