The season started in August with warm up games against St Mary’s and against Blackrock where Alain Rolland introduced us to the new ELV rules.
There was also a get to know you weekend in Carlingford before we started on the competitive trail.
We kicked off the Pool stages of the Leinster Championship/Senior cup at the end of August with victories against UCD, Greystones and Barnhall to top the pool and enter the play offs. Here we defeated UCD and Old Belvedere before meeting Clontarf in the Final. This was a very close encounter where the Lansdowne defence and resolve won out to achieve a 9-5 victory. We remember the great try saving tackle from Shane Gahan close to the end and so facilitate a victory that brought the Leinster Senior Cup to Lansdowne for the 25th time after a 10 year gap.
The record in the cup was: Played 6 Won 6 Points For 162 Against 60
In between time we competed in the AIB cup and were caught by a wily Nenagh Ormond side who won defeated us by 9pts to 5pts. As an aside, it was a great pleasure to meet new sides throughout the season and I thank them for the hospitality and courtesy shown to all in Lansdowne.
The AIL started in October and we came up against a strong UCC side who battled for a 19-19 draw with us in a match either side could have won. Things got back on track the following week with a bonus point win over Instonians only to be followed by a frustrating last minute loss to Bective by 1 point. Before Christmas we had further victories over Old Crescent, Wanderers, Belfast Harlequins with a bonus point and crucially in a very tense match we defeated Ballynahinch. This set us up for the New Year and the run in of the League programme. On a day when conditions were absolutely dreadful, and when most other matches were cancelled, we defeated Bruff 6-0 to top Division 2. Victories over Clonakilty, Greystones and Thomond followed without a bonus point until we beat DLSP and got the crucial try bonus. Highfield were next up and safely negotiated before we got a victory and bonus point over Malone to set us up for a last day finale against Trinity with a win ensuring promotion. Sadly it was not to be and Trinity tore into Lansdowne from the kick off, scored the games only try and held out for a one point victory which all but sealed our fate as Ballynahinch with a match in hand were on fire and destroying all in front of them. Lansdowne finished 3rd in Division 2 and lost in the play offs to Ballynahinch 29-13.
The AIL records were Played 16 Won 12 Drew 1 Lost 3 Points For 306 Against 170. (Best defensive record in Division 2)
The top points scorer over all matches was Charl Oosthuizen with 257 points including 14 tries.
It is a great pity that we did not get promotion to Division 1B next season but the team and management put in a huge effort and are to be commended. Our thanks are due to Steve McIvor, the Head Coach, Stephen Rooney, Director of Rugby, Aidan McCullen,
Assistant Coach and Alan Maher, the captain. The team management ticket of Mick Quinn, Brian Corrigan and Paddy Gore did an immense amount of work and we are also grateful for the assistance given by Willie Anderson through the season.
Again special thanks to Paul Clinch (Fourth Official) Bryan O’Neill (Fixtures Secretary), Marc Smith (Fitness Coach) and the ever present Michael Cassidy (Video Cameraman). Alan Cuffe continued to man the gate for the 13th consecutive season in difficult circumstances due to ground layout.
