J1 Metro League Week 2

St Marys College RFC 33 Lansdowne FC 24

The seconds lost 33-24 in a game of two halves. After a fast paced start by Marys, Lansdowne found themselves 22-0 down after just 22 minutess. Lansdowne had no one to blame but themselves having given away 7 penalties in the first 22 minutes and never really holding on to the ball. However, just before half time after some good pressure by the forwards Phil Caldwell scored a try converted by Andrew Geraghty leaving it 22-7 at half time. After his try ‘Flipper’ rejoiced and boldly asked “How d’ya like them apples”... The St Marys pack was quick to turn Flipper’s attention to the direction of the score board!

That was the last act for Phil as he went off for a few stitches in his head, unfortunately these were not for his mouth.

At half time we had given away 11 penalties and the team were to concentrate holding the ball and not giving away penalties.

Lansdowne started the second half like Marys had started with strong pressure coming from the front and fast hands spreading the defence out wide. Impressive open side Dan Hills scored a good forwards try just after half time. This was followed soon after by a try by Paddy Flood converted by Andrew Geraghty leaving the score 22-17. The team was playing good running rugby and soon the score was 25-24 after a good try by Shane Gahan with some good passing from the his fellow Green-Machiner, Stu McCarron.

This was not to be Lansdowne’s day however as the game went into the last quarter the penalties started to appear again and Marys scored a try followed quickly by a penalty penalty to leave the score 33-24.

While the win was St Marys, Lansdowne will take the consoltation of a 4 try bonus point.

J1 Metro League Week 1

Lansdowne FC 26 Old Wesley RFC 21

The J1s had a successful first outing of the season eith a 26-21 victory over Wesley in the J1 Metro League with tries from youth and experience, Dink and Dan McEvoy. You can decide which one is youth............

This was a good first run out to a big, well organised Wesley team who got a late penalty to ensure a losing bonus point leading to a tense finish to the game.

The seconds have a good blend of youth and some more senior players and even though we won the game the team was not satisified with their performance and are hoping to build from there.

Next up is Marys on Sunday at 3pm in Templeville Rd as always with every team in the club you support is greatly appreciated.

Lansdowne lift the Metro Cup again

Lansdowne continued their run of good form in the Metropolitan Cup this year with a hard fought 18-13 win over Monkstown RFC. Playing in their third successive final, the J1 team from Lansdowne avenged the 2008 defeat to Seapoint. The team beat Terenure, Greystones, Coolmine and Seapoint on the way to claiming the coverted prize for the second time in three years.

Lansdowne, led by William Wallace, managed to take an early lead through a try to winger Johnny Coleman. Monkstown continued playing a hard, tight style of rugby forcing Lansdowne into a number of mistakes and ensuring a close game into half time.

Second half

Midway through the second half Lansdowne took a handy lead after a try to Lorcan Kavanagh handed them an 18-6 scoreline. With 10 minutes remaining and down to 13 men after two yellow card indiscretions, Lansdowne's line was finally breached with a Monkstown try taking the game to the wire in the final minutes.

However, in the end Lansdowne's dominant defence, a feature all season, held giving the club a well earned victory. Strong performances from Ron Boucher, William Wallace, Phil Caldwell, Simon Smyth, Lorcan Kavanagh and Danny Marquez paved the way for the eventual victory.
